Of COURSE you're still welcome, silly. And, you ARE sharper than a bowling ball, you were just desperate! I fully understand!

Hmm, well, maybe doing a low carb diet along with weight training, you might see some results?

And no, not weight training to get HOOOOGE, just enough to make them muscles hungry so you're feeding THEM instead of the fat on your ass!

All I can say is that I wish I started weight training 20 years ago... because for me, the training plus my cardio is what's working NOW. I'll be 39 in October.

Not exactly 55, but my metabolism slowed to almost non-existent after baby #2 and TOO MUCH BOOZE.

Good luck to you, and stick around!

I'm new here. I guess I'm one of those bowling balls. I joined Kimkins. I've been going to the gym for years. I've been doing the 5 to 6 meals a day for years. I "never" lost any weight or bodyfat. I am 55 and menopausal. I have worked with bodybuilders and trainers with absolutely no results. I didn't even lose a dress size. I joined Kimkins. I lowered my carbs and my calories, but not drastically. I eat maybe 800-900 calories. Once in a great while, I went lower. I am not able to maintaina lower calorie diet. I just can't do it. But...I did lose 13 lbs. When I stopped doing Kimkins, I gained back 3. I am now holding at 168.  If I had all the answers as to why I can't lose the weight, I wouldn't need support.
BTW..my thyroid is good too. I respect your opinions, but there are alot of us out there, who want to lose the weight. We're not bodybuilders, we just want to look nice that's all. Oh...and it's nice to be here if I'm still welcome.

Mary Ann

Mary Ann, thanks for posting. If you have to eat such low calories just to lose weight, something's wrong. Very wrong. I don't care what doctors have said to you.

I've been where you are, having to eat 700-900 calories/day just to lose. I did it b/c that's what I had to do, not b/c I chose to. I had a messed up thyroid, adrenal glands and finally, was diagnosed as IR. But everything's good now and I'm able to lose on 500-700 more calories/day.

You can sort it out, but it'll take a lot of work on your part trying to find someone to help you.  It can be done, though. It's a helluva a lot better than living with a metabolism that's failing you. Trust me.

I just phoned Mary Ann. She's going to get her free t3 and free t4 tested, and I've directed her to stop the thyroid madness website. She's tracking her diet for a few days and will get back to us with the results.

Mary Ann, of course you are welcome.  Glad you found this board.

Some of our members are very knowledgeable about metabolism and hormone problems, some are experts on diet, some on exercise/weight training, and some have overlapping expertise in these areas.  No one here is going to give you any dangerous advice or play doctor at you.  What we will do is equip you with the information you need in order to get a proper assessment and (if appropriate) treatment to get your metabolism back to something reasonable.

I understand that you don't want to look like a bodybuilder.  That's absolutely fine, of course!  The great unsung truth that the diet/fitness industry doesn't really want you to know is that...what you do to look nice, and what you do to look like a bodybuilder...it's exactly the same.  Bodybuilders take it to the absolute fat-loss extreme, is all.

(Full disclosure:  I am not a bodybuilder.  Really.  Ask anyone here.)

MaryAnn i hope you feel welcome here. ((hug))

as already stated, there IS something wrong if one has to eat that low, seriously.

I started out 50lbs over wt a few yrs ago and no matter what did my body wasnt givin' up the lbees. Now with my thryoid  regulated, im ticking along evenly with everyone else.

My docs told me i was normal too. I nearly cracked up and lost my mind, physically un able to get off the chair every day, but my thyroid was 'normal' HA!   I have the auto immune version called Hashimotos. That might not be your problem, but there certainly is a problem.

Mary Ann also read thru this thread here at BLC, it's very imformative too. http://web.archive.org/web/20060322234948/www.beyondlowcarb.net/index.php?topic=3833.0

Please get copies of your Blood work and keep them. If you want a second (third or fifth ) opinion interpreting  give a hollar.

I wanted to ask, does a saliva test do the same thing as checking thyroid, or does it have to be a blood test? We have a place here called the hetrick center that works in sports medicine, chiro., nutrition and they do saliva test but I don't know what it is for.

Go for the blood test, Mary Ann. Remember...... TSH, FREE T3 and FREE T4. Nothing else will do.

I imagine the saliva test would be out of pocket. I've heard of the test - it's recent - but it's doesn't have a track record.

I live in pa. How am I going to have a blood test sent out to a lab? Doesn't the doctor have to do that?

The doc orders the test and takes care of sending it out OR they send YOU to the lab and the lab takes care of it. You just  show up and donate some blood.

Do I have to tell them specifically that I want T3 and T 4 and the other things tested? I'm still going to get my results from my last test.

MaryAnn, you tell the dr what tests you want. Im sure he'll roll his eyes but insist. He'll write up the order. The results will come to your dr's office and then they will give them to you. Get a paper copy, not results by phone.

IF dr refuses or thinks he knows better   Roll Eyes and only orders the Totals (some do grrrr) the you can order the results yourself from www.healthcheckusa.com chose profile no 2 and the lab will tell you where to go and the results will be mailed to you.

Why not wait until you get your tests? You could get another one done through a doctor or you could even get one ordered through HealthCheckUSA, although no doctor would really use it. It would only be for your benefit.

If you'd like, I seem to remember some good thyroid doctors in the PA area.
